Swordplay / UTSA Club Fencing
Celebrating a timeless sport since Spring 2002

About Swordplay

Swordplay is a group of students at the University of Texas at San Antonio dedicated to learning and competing in the sport of fencing.

Swordplay first formed as a Registered Student Organization (RSO) in January 2002. In the fall of 2003, the Recreation Center opened on the UTSA 1604 campus, and Swordplay successfully petitioned to become a UTSA Club Sport. As an official Club Sport with the Recreation Center, the club is allowed to represent UTSA in intercollegiate competitions.

Swordplay competes in the Southwest Intercollegiate Fencing Association, or SWIFA, against other member schools including:

  • Baylor University
  • Rice University
  • Texas A&M University
  • Texas State University
  • Texas Tech University
  • University of Houston
  • University of North Texas
  • University of Texas at Austin
  • San Antonio Community College

The club is primarily student run, with a club faculty advisor to offer support and advice. Because fencing is usually not available to students until they get to college, members of Swordplay are dedicated to teaching beginning fencers. Fencing is a co-ed sport, and all are welcome to give the sport, and this club, a try.
